Frequently Asked Questions

Every fountain, sculpture and marble surface that leaves our studio is shaped by hand and considered in detail. Here you will find the answers behind our craft, our process, and the care we bring to every commission.

Products

Cryptic Illusions was founded on the belief that a home or hospitality space deserves objects with genuine presence, not mass-produced accents. Every fountain, sculpture and panel of optical art is carved, cast or hand-finished by artisans who have spent decades mastering their material, whether that is Makrana marble, resin, or metal. We do not run production lines. Instead, each commission moves through design, material selection and finishing as a singular project, often shaped in dialogue with the client or their designer. The result is work that reads as sculpture first and decor second, built to anchor a room rather than simply fill it.

Yes. Every piece that carries the Cryptic Illusions name passes through the hands of a trained artisan before it ever reaches you. Our ateliers work in small batches rather than mass production, which allows carvers, sculptors and finishers to give each surface the attention it needs, from the depth of a marble vein to the precise curve of a fountain basin. Even where a design is repeated for multiple clients, no two pieces are truly identical, since natural stone, cast metal and hand-applied finishes always carry subtle variation. We see that variation as a signature of authenticity rather than an inconsistency to correct.

We do, and we are precise about it. Makrana marble, quarried in Rajasthan and historically used in monuments including the Taj Mahal, is prized for its fine grain, luminous white base and restrained veining. Our stone is sourced directly from established Makrana quarries and verified before it enters production, so you are never working with a composite or a look-alike substitute. Because Makrana is a natural material, expect gentle variation in tone and vein pattern between blocks; we consider this part of the marble's character. On request, we can provide documentation of origin alongside your commission for insurance or provenance purposes.

Most pieces in our collection can be adapted to your space. Dimensions can typically be scaled up or down, finishes adjusted between matte, polished or antiqued, and for our 3D optical illusion wall art, the color palette and depth of relief can be tailored to your interior. Framing and mounting hardware are selected to suit the wall or setting where the piece will live. Some intricate marble or tribal sculpture designs have structural limits on resizing, which our team will explain honestly during consultation rather than promising changes that would compromise the integrity of the work. We would rather guide you toward a version that will last.

Custom Orders

Every custom project begins with a conversation, not a form. A specialist will discuss the space, its light, its scale and its purpose, whether it is a private residence, a hotel lobby or a commercial lounge. From there we develop mood references and material samples, followed by detailed renders so you can see proportion and finish before a single cut is made. Once the design is approved, we confirm a timeline and production schedule tailored to the complexity of the piece. Throughout production you will receive progress updates and, for larger commissions, photographs at key milestones so nothing arrives as a surprise.

Absolutely, and it is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do. Our design team can work from a concept sketch, a reference image, an architectural drawing, or simply a description of the feeling you want the piece to evoke. We will develop initial concepts, refine them with you through iterative sketches or 3D models, and confirm material and scale before production begins. Fully bespoke commissions naturally require a longer lead time than pieces from our existing collection, since new tooling, patterns or molds may need to be created, but the result is a piece that exists nowhere else.

Yes, and a significant share of our commissions come directly from design and architecture studios. We are comfortable working from technical drawings, elevation plans and specification sheets, and can supply CAD-friendly dimensions, load information for fountains, and finish samples for approval boards. Our team can also join site visits or virtual walkthroughs to confirm placement, plumbing access and structural considerations before fabrication begins. For ongoing collaborations, we offer a dedicated point of contact so that revisions, approvals and installation coordination move quickly rather than through a general inbox.

Shipping

Timelines vary with the complexity of the piece. Ready-designed wall art and smaller sculptures typically take four to six weeks to produce, while marble commissions and water fountains, which involve carving, curing and finishing, generally require eight to twelve weeks. Fully bespoke designs may extend further depending on tooling and material sourcing. Once production is complete, shipping adds additional time based on destination, typically one to three weeks domestically and longer for international deliveries. Your specialist will confirm a realistic completion window at the start of your order and keep you informed if anything shifts.

We do, and international clients make up a meaningful part of our collector and trade base. Depending on the destination, we work with vetted freight partners experienced in fine art and stone logistics, handling export documentation, customs clearance and, where relevant, white-glove delivery to your door. Duties and import taxes are determined by your country's customs authority and are the responsibility of the recipient unless otherwise agreed in advance. For large or fragile commissions, we recommend discussing logistics with your specialist early in the design process so packaging and routing can be planned properly from the start.

Large fountains are shipped in custom-built wooden crates engineered around the exact dimensions and weight distribution of the piece, with internal bracing to prevent movement in transit. Vulnerable areas such as basin edges, spouts and carved details are wrapped in multiple layers of protective padding before crating. Each shipment is fully insured for its declared value, and where local regulations allow, we coordinate delivery with riggers experienced in moving heavy stone and water features. On arrival, we recommend an immediate inspection while the delivery team is still present, so any concern can be documented on the spot rather than after the fact.

Returns

Because bespoke and made-to-order pieces are produced specifically for you, from unique dimensions to custom finishes, these commissions are considered final sale once production has begun, except in cases of manufacturing defect. We understand this is a significant investment, which is why we build multiple confirmation steps into the design process, including renders and material approvals, before any cutting or casting starts. Pieces purchased directly from our existing ready-made collection, without customization, are eligible for return within fourteen days of delivery in original condition. Your specialist will always clarify which category your order falls under before you confirm it.

If a piece arrives damaged, contact our team within forty-eight hours of delivery with photographs of the packaging and the item itself, ideally before the crate is fully discarded. Every shipment leaves our studio insured, and our team will manage the claim directly with the carrier so you are not left navigating it alone. Depending on the extent of the damage, we will arrange either a professional repair by our own artisans, a replacement component, or in rare cases a full remake. We treat damage in transit as our responsibility to resolve, not an inconvenience for you to absorb.

Installation

For most tabletop and small indoor fountains, placement is straightforward and can be handled without outside help, following the setup guide included with your piece. Larger indoor installations and all outdoor fountains, however, involve plumbing, electrical connections for pumps, and in some cases structural load considerations, and we strongly recommend professional installation for these. We provide detailed technical specifications to share with your contractor or installer, and in select regions we can recommend installation partners familiar with our products. Skipping professional installation on a large fountain is one of the most common causes of avoidable issues after delivery.

Marble should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry cloth and cleaned only with a pH-neutral stone cleaner, since acidic or abrasive products can dull its surface over time. We recommend resealing polished marble roughly once a year, more often in high-traffic or outdoor settings, to preserve its resistance to staining. For fountains, use clean, low-mineral water where possible, and clean the basin and pump periodically to prevent limescale and algae buildup. In colder climates, outdoor fountains should be drained and covered before frost. Every piece ships with a care guide specific to its material, and our team is always available for questions beyond it.

General

Our concierge team is available to discuss anything from a single sculpture to a full commercial installation. The fastest way to reach us is through our contact page, where you can describe your project and preferred timeline so a specialist with the right expertise responds. We typically reply within one business day, sooner for time-sensitive trade projects. If you are working on a larger hospitality or architectural commission, mention it directly in your message and we will arrange a call to discuss scope, timeline and budget in more depth.
